Cupping uses gentle suction to lift the skin and underlying tissue, while gua sha uses a smooth tool to scrape lightly along the skin.
Both draw fresh circulation to an area and are commonly used for muscle tension, tightness and the early stages of a cold. They can leave temporary marks that fade in a few days.
In TCM, both are described as moving stagnation.

Temporary circular or reddish marks are normal and not bruises in the usual sense; they fade within days.
